What quantum computing Actually Is

What is quantum computing?

Quantum computers use atomic particles (usually electrons or photons) to be the foundation of their calculations. They are called qubits and like a traditional transistor have a value of 1 or 0, but also have a value that is both 1 and 0. This allows quantum computers to be dense and extremely fast. 

Quantum computers work by calculating on qubits rather than traditional transistor logic gates. Using qubits, quantum computers can exploit the mysterious physics of quantum mechanics, including entanglement and superposition in their calculations. 

By using entanglement and superposition properties of qubits, quantum computers can perform massive calculations quickly and in parallel. A small quantum computer will be as powerful as the largest HPC clustered computer. 

Quantum computing is still very much a research project, although commercially available solutions are very close. The biggest challenges currently are the extremely cold temperatures required to keep qubits stable (and then this uses a lot of electricity). While superposition and entanglement give quantum computing its power, they are also very unstable and lead to a lot of errors in calculations. Managing these errors is a field of study in and of itself.
